I need advice on attic air sealing

I'm getting ready to seal up my attic and add insulation because the top floor of my house stays hotter than the rest. While checking things out, I noticed a pipe running up through the attic and out the roof. I want to be sure it's okay to seal around it and close any gaps, has anyone in this forum done this?

It depends what kind of pipe it, but I'm guessing there's a rubber boot you'll probably need to replace. If the pipe is redundant, you may even consider removing it and plug the hole entirely. Can you see where the pipe is coming from?

Yeah, I ran into the same thing a while back. I used fire rated foam to seal around the pipe and added insulation snugly around it afterward

@Olsteeen fire-rated spray foam around the pipe works well, then just tuck insulation snugly around it. Make sure the pipe itself doesn’t need any clearance or ventilation before sealing.

Yes, you can seal around it. Just make sure it’s not a hot vent (like a flue), use fire-rated foam/clearance for hot pipes, otherwise regular foam is fine for plumbing vents.
